Your Initial Visit:

The purpose of this visit is to obtain a comprehensive history, to make an adequate physical examination, and to establish the diagnosis and the type of therapy to be initiated. This usually takes approximately 45 minutes.

Skin Testing:

After your initial visit, the doctor will determine whether you need a comprehensive allergic evaluation. This would be accomplished by skin testing, which involves a prick test (done on the back) and / or an intradermal test (done on the arm).

The number of tests needed, which varies from individual to individual, will be discussed with you by your physician. Both of these tests are very simple and essentially painless. For children, we use a special device which, again, is essentially painless and takes the fear of needles away.

The tests are read in 15 to 20 minutes. There may be one or two visits required for the skin testing. Each visit will last approximately one hour.

Summary Conference:

Following the skin tests, a summary conference is scheduled where the doctors will discuss the skin test results and your future therapy will be planned. We encourage parents of children to participate.

Extracts & Allergy Injections:

If it is necessary for you to take allergy shots, the formula for an extract is constructed by the physician. This formula is based on history, a clinical exam, and skin and lab testing results. Various pollens, molds and other inhalants are mixed together to meet your specific requirements.

Then, you are notified that your extracts are ready and that you may start taking your shots. Initially, you can take these once or twice a week, during what is considered a building-up stage. Then, the shot intervals are lengthened. As you improve, the interval may become one shot every two, three or even four weeks.

The length of the program varies, but a three- to five-year course is generally suggested. It may be less or more depending on your individual response to the therapy.

A progress visit would be necessary as a part of your medical program to determine your response. This also allows the doctor to judge whether a modification to your treatment is necessary. We ask that you call the office for a follow-up appointment or for any occasional sick visits that may be necessary.
